What is Reiki?
Reiki is a holistic healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word "Reiki" is made up of two Japanese words: "rei," meaning universal, and "ki," meaning life energy. Reiki is the channeling of universal life energy. Reiki does not follow one faith, religion, or belief. It honors all. Reiki energy comes from the highest energy source the recipient believes in.
During a Reiki session, a practitioner uses their hands to either lightly touch or hover over the recipient's body. The idea is that the practitioner acts as a conduit for the universal life energy, allowing it to flow through them and into the recipient. This energy is believed to help balance the body's energy system (chakras), promote relaxation, and support the body's natural healing processes. Reiki honors intention. The recipient is asked to set an intention for healing at the beginning of the session.
While the exact mechanism of how Reiki works is not scientifically proven, practitioners and enthusiasts often describe it as a way to clear blocked or stagnant energy, allowing the life force to flow freely. Some people find it helpful for reducing stress, alleviating pain, and improving overall well-being.
In a session a recipient and practitioner may have similar or different experiences. Experiences can include heating and/or cooling sensations, physical movement inside the body and throughout the limbs (think small twitches before falling asleep at night), colors (related back to the chakras), memories unblocking/healing and visualizations.
It's important to note that Reiki is considered a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for conventional medical treatment. It's more about promoting a sense of harmony and balance within the body's energy system.
